What is malware?

The term malware is short for ‘malicious software’, meaning unwanted programs on your computer, tablet or mobile phone that try to disrupt your device’s normal functioning and steal or even delete valuable personal information in the process. Some malware can also operate in the background, without you ever even realising it’s there.

Have you noticed your computer freezing or crashing often? Has your browser’s homepage changed – without your permission? You might have a malware-infected device on your hands. Even the most careful among us can end up falling prey to these threats. They’re more than annoying, too, and can cause some real damage if not addressed quickly.

What are some common types of malware in emails?

The world of malware is constantly evolving and it’s important for internet users to be aware of the types of threats out there. Many can be spread via email as well. Here are some of the most common:

  • Adware: Adware describes those pesky pop-ups and redirects to unwanted webpages.
  • Spyware: Hackers use spyware to keep track of, or spy on, the activities of a user, including which keys they use. This makes it easy to collect login information and personal data.
  • Trojans: Often spread via email or visits to infected websites, trojans trick you into executing them. Have you ever seen a pop-up ad telling you that you should scan your computer because it’s been infected by a virus? This might be a trojan in disguise.
  • Viruses: Although many use the terms “virus” and “malware” interchangeably, a virus is technically a type of malware. Viruses infect other healthy files on your device, turning them into hosts that further spread the virus to other parts of your device.
  • Worms: Worms are self-replicating, meaning they spread by themselves and can infect hundreds of computers in a matter of minutes once unleashed, for example, by opening an infected email.

Of course, malware can also be a hybrid, combining any of these forms to target your device. This is why it’s so important to have antivirus for your email account.
