Rafael Nadal won't rush retirement plans

Rafael Nadal is "not in a hurry" to finalise his retirement plans.

The Spanish tennis legend will not be playing at the US Open as he attempts to build his fitness for the Laver Cup in September and explained that he is in no rush to bring his fabulous career to a close.

Nadal told Marca: "I'm not in a hurry to make a decision about my future. What is certain is that I will be in the Laver Cup, and then we will see."

The former world number one revealed that he would be considering his future in the sport after losing to old rival Novak Djokovic in the men's singles competition at the Paris Olympics.

Nadal said: "I can’t spend all day thinking about that.

"I come here, and you ask me the same thing every day and in the end it’s very difficult to get back to my best form if I think about whether I’m going to retire or not.

"I have been suffering a lot of injuries the last two years. So, if I feel that I am not competitive enough to keep going, or physically I’m not ready to keep going, I will stop, and I will let you know. But I don’t think every day about if I am retiring or not.

"When this tournament is over, I will take the necessary decisions based on my feelings and desire."
