'We always had football in common': Sven-Goran Eriksson's father pays tribute to former England boss

Sven-Goran Eriksson's father "always had football in common" with his son.

The former England manager passed away aged 76 on Monday (26.08.24) after a battle with cancer and his 95-year-old father, also named Sven, admits that he will now be lonely when he goes to watch his local club Torsby IF play.

Sven told the Swedish newspaper Expressen: "It will be empty without him. We have always had football in common."

Eriksson passed away after revealing earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and his father is pleased that his son was allowed to pass away in peace.

He said: "It's tough, it is. But it has to go, that's the way it is. Svennis was allowed to fall asleep at home, just as he wanted.

Sven revealed that his son is likely to be buried in the Fryksande church in Torsby and expects there to be "a lot of people" at the service.

He said: "There will probably be a lot of people, I'm not too keen on it either. When there are a lot of people. But you have to consider that it is a sign of how popular he was.

"I don't like funerals, it should be nice when it's over. I hope it will feel a little easier after it. That grief is not felt in the same way."

Eriksson became England's first foreign manager in 2001 and led the Three Lions at three major tournaments and his passing was confirmed in a statement by his children.

It read: "Our father Sven-Goran Eriksson fell asleep peacefully in his home at Bjorkefors outside Sunne this morning. He has for a long time fought bravely with his illness, but now it came to an end.

"Dad told us at the beginning of this year about his serious illness and received an amazing response from friends and football fans around Europe.

"He was invited to several football teams in England, Italy, Portugal and Sweden. They shared their love for football and for dad.

"It was unforgettable for both him and us. He expressed his appreciation and joy and stated that such beautiful words are usually only uttered when someone has died.

"We hope that you will remember Svennis as the good and positive person he always was both in public and at home with us."
