Emma Raducanu 'sad' after early US Open elimination

Emma Raducanu was left feeling "sad" after suffering a first-round exit at the US Open.

The former Flushing Meadows champion was beaten in three sets by Sofia Kenin in her opening match in New York and couldn't hide her disappointment after missing the Olympics to prepare for the Grand Slam event.

Raducanu told reporters: "I feel down, I feel sad. Obviously, this is a tournament I really want to do well in so... after the first set I was outplayed completely and I think I did well to equal it.

"The third set was pretty high-level tennis and I think certain parts of my game in dealing with her speed of shot, dealing with her pace, certain parts I actually executed better than in previous matches.

"I came across a very in-form opponent, and she played really well."

The elimination capped off Raducanu's year at the majors and she plans to watch her matches back in order to improve in 2025.

She said: "I'm just going to go back to the drawing board and train and analyse where I went wrong and try and improve for the rest of the season.

"Obviously the Slams are over for this year, but it's not actually that long until Australia comes around again."

Raducanu only played a single tournament between Wimbledon and the US Open and explained that she plans to manage her schedule "slightly differently" in the future to make sure that she is better prepared for Grand Slams.

She told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I would like to play more matches.

"I wouldn't probably still play every single tournament leading up, but I would probably play more than I did this time.

"It's a lesson to learn for next year."
