Adam Armstrong can't 'top' play-off winning goal

Adam Armstrong doesn’t know if anything can “top” scoring the winning goal in the play-off final.

The 27-year-old striker bagged the only goal of the game when Southampton faced Leeds at Wembley in May, taking the club back to the Premier League, and he admitted he’ll never forget his 24th-minute strike.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “They’re pressure moments – before the game, the atmosphere gave me goosebumps.

“But everything goes out of the window during the 90 minutes, you concentrate on what you’ve got to do.

“To score the winner at Wembley is what kids dream of. It’s hard to put into words the feelings we went through that day. Maybe nothing will top it.”

Adam admitted he wasn’t even sure if his goal would stand when he hit the ball towards the net.

He said: “I’ve never had a feeling like that in football. Will Smallbone slipped me through and I wasn’t sure if I was offside or not, because there was VAR in the final.

“I just thought I would hit it as hard as I could across goal and hope it went in.”

Adam went viral after the game for celebrating the win when referee John Brooks blew his whistle after 101 minutes – but he was awarding a free-kick to Leeds, not ending the match.

The player laughed: “I went too early didn’t I? I had looked at the scoreboard, we were past the amount of time the ref said he was going to play, then he blew his whistle.

“I was praying they wouldn’t score from that free-kick – I would have been a meme for years.”
