Izzy Christiansen envies Lionesses for Sarina Wiegman management

Izzy Christiansen is “envious” of the England women playing under Sarina Wiegman.

The former footballer played 31 times for her country during 2015 to 2019 and though she has no “jealousy” towards the team’s achievements in recent years because she is “proud” of her own accomplishments, she wishes she’d had the chance to work with the current coach.

She told FourFourTwo magazine: “I look back on my time with England as being during choppy waters and now the waters are pretty calm.

“We had to go through that to be where we are now, with the Euros win and getting to the World Cup final.

“I don’t look back with regret or jealousy and I’m so proud of what I achieved as well, but if I’m being really honest, I am a bit envious of the players in that they get to play for Sarina Wiegman, because I absolutely love her coaching style and methods and what she has done with the team.”

Much of Izzy’s time with England was under Phil Neville and she had a lot of respect for what he tried to achieve.

She said: “Phil is a lovely guy and definitely had the right intentions.

“There were difficult phases towards the end of Mark Sampson’s tenure and then into the interim roles before Phil came in.

“I’m gutted we weren’t able to get the best out of our squad back then.

“That wasn’t Phil’s fault, but things weren’t quite right and there was a lot that still needed to be ironed out.

“Phil tried a lot of different ideas with the team in an attempt to get the best out of us – some worked and some didn’t.

“We did win the SheBelieves Cup during Phil’s tenure, so we tasted winning.”
