Thomas Tuchel confirmed as England's new manager

Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as England's new manager.

The German coach has penned an 18-month contract and will take the reins from 1 January 2025 - becoming the third non-British manager of the national team following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Interim boss Lee Carsley will remain in charge for England's Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month before Tuchel officially begins work in the post.

Tuchel has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season but has experience of football in England after taking charge of Chelsea between 2021 and 2022.

He said: "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.

"I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.

"To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting."

Football Association (FA) chief executive Mark Bullingham said that England have "appointed one of the best coaches in the world" as they look to end a trophy drought stretching back to 1966.

He said: "Thomas and the team have a single-minded focus on giving us the best possible chance to win the World Cup in 2026."

The FA confirmed that Tuchel had signed a contract to succeed Gareth Southgate before last week's Nations League fixtures but confirmation was held back in order to "minimise distraction" around the games.

A statement read: "The announcement was delayed to minimise distraction around the international camp that has just concluded."

English coach Anthony Barry will serve as Tuchel's assistant after working with him at Chelsea and Bayern while Carsley will return to his role as manager of the Under-21s.
