Wayne Rooney shocked by Thomas Tuchel becoming England boss

Wayne Rooney is "surprised" by Thomas Tuchel taking over as England manager.

The German will become the third foreign coach of the Three Lions when he takes up the position in January 2025 and the former England captain is shocked that the FA haven’t opted for a homegrown manager.

Rooney said: "I think he’s (Tuchel) a very good coach, but surprised the FA have employed him."

The Plymouth Argyle manager is particularly shocked that the FA have chosen a foreign manager when they have invested heavily in English coaches at the St George’s Park football centre who have been successful at junior levels.

Rooney said: "What the FA have built - and I was part of that and have seen first hand what they’ve built over the last 10, 15 years - it’s been great.

"It’s been a great platform for young coaches coming through, so I’m surprised they haven’t gone in with one of their own.

"But they’ve made the decision and I wish him all the best, and I hope he does well for us."

Tuchel has signed an 18-month deal to take charge of the Three Lions at the 2026 World Cup and admits that it is not "ideal" to have an overseas coach for such an important tournament.

Rooney - who played under England’s previous foreign managers Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello - said: "I think it is slightly different when you go to a World Cup or a European Championship and you’re watching your (foreign) coach watch his home nation.

"I’ve experienced that first hand and it’s not ideal.

"But I’m sure Thomas is very professional and he’ll do everything he can to help England win."
