Ivan Toney still thinks he can play for England after Saudi Pro League move

Ivan Toney believes he can get back in the England squad despite his move to Saudi Arabia.

The striker left Brentford to join Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli in the summer and thinks he can figure in the plans of new Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel despite many questioning if his move to the Middle East was the right choice for his international career.

Toney told FourFourTwo: "I'm only in control of what I can do on the pitch – if that's the case and me coming here is damaging my chances, then I can't really change that.

"All I can do is focus on myself, play well and see what can happen."

Toney made several appearances off the bench at Euro 2024 and thinks he can be involved again for the national team at the World Cup in 2026.

He said: "I've got to aim for those kinds of things, but there are other people competing also.

"I see myself competing with whoever I've got to compete against – the main focus (at Al-Ahli) is playing well, scoring goals and making sure the team gets three points.

"This league is a tough league. Everyone has their opinion, it doesn't mean it's factual, I'm here to focus on myself and what will be will be. If I was to get back involved on the international stage, I'm ready for it. But if not, then it is what it is."

Toney is now playing in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo and can't help but set himself the target of scoring more than the football icon.

He said: "Hopefully I can score more. But I'm concentrating with myself, I don't watch what other people are doing. He's a top player, I'll concentrate on myself."
