Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes was left fearing the worst after ankle injury

Patrick Mahomes "feared the worst" after he was injured playing for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The NFL quarterback suffered the worrying injury problem as the Chiefs beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in overtime on Monday (04.11.24) and is always concerned with the strain placed on his body on the field.

Mahomes said: "Definitely scary. I think it hurt more just because it's the same ankle I rolled last week, so it scared me a little bit.

"When you don't know exactly what happens and you get that sharp pain, you always fear the worst."

Mahomes suffered the injury after making a touchdown pass to team-mate Samaje Pernie and expressed his relief when he realised the problem wasn't too serious.

He explained: "I was obviously running for the goal line and was kind of committed to running the football and at the last second [passed to] Samaje, and so I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit.

"You feel the pain, and that scares you. I've dealt with ankles before, but I just kind of laid there, and as time went on, the pain subsided.

"I just kind of got back to it and got back moving again and felt comfortable going out there."

Mahomes had a key role as the Chiefs kept their undefeated start to the season going and coach Andy Reid was left marvelling at his quarterback's powers of recovery.

The Chiefs boss said: "I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it, but he might have the loosest ankles in America. It’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things and then he’s mentally tough on top of that."

Reid added: "Yeah, he’s (Patrick Mahomes) a competitor. I told him I was going to take him out and he about wanted to fight me so, he’s a tough kid."
