The Republican politician secured victory over Democrat Kamala Harris to win the US presidency for the second time in Tuesday's (05.11.24) election and McIlroy thinks that the golf-lover can bring the long-running talks between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi-backed LIV Golf to a conclusion.
A proposed deal between the groups was first unveiled in June 2023 but is likely to face opposition from America's Department of Justice (DOJ) over concerns that it could breach anti-competition laws - although the Northern Irish golfer thinks that Trump's return to the presidency could change matters.
McIlroy said: "Given what's happened, I think that clears the way a little bit."
The president-elect has claimed that he is capable of solving the conflict between the golfing bodies and the four-time major winner believes that Trump supporter Elon Musk could also have a part to play.
McIlroy said: "We'll see. He might be able to. He's got Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest man in the world, beside him.
"We might be able to do something if we can get Musk involved, too. I think from the outside looking in, it's probably a little less complicated than it actually is.
"Trump has a great relationship with Saudi Arabia. He's got a great relationship with golf. He's a lover of golf. So, maybe. Who knows?
"But I think as the president of the United States, he's probably got bigger things to focus on than golf."
