Daniel Dubois opens up about surprise decision to challenge Jake Paul

Daniel Dubois has shed light on his unexpected decision to challenge Jake Paul.

The IBF champion, 27, has extending an offer for the YouTuber-turned-boxer, also 27, to fight for his heavyweight world title. Paul recently moved up to heavyweight to defeat Mike Tyson, 58, in a high-profile and controversial age-gap bout watched by over 100 million people when it was live-streamed on Netflix.

Dubois has now revealed the reasoning behind his challenge during an interview with Bricks to Riches.

He said: “We messaged him, my dad and everyone decided, ‘Yeah, let’s call him out’.”

“Even though it’s just publicity, you never know what can happen in this sport. It’s strange times, so we made the offer.”

The message sent to Paul read: “Hi Jake, good business on the weekend but how would you feel fighting for the legitimate heavyweight championship of the world? This is Daniel Dubois calling you out, let’s get it on.”

Paul was quick to respond publicly, poking fun at Dubois while acknowledging the possibility of a match.

He posted: “Man been boxing for 12 years, has over 100 fights between amateur and pro and fought on my undercard…hahaha. But f** it… I’m going to have Nakisa (Bidarian – Paul’s manager) talk to (promoter) Frankie Warren and get you in line for the throne. Unlike (boxer) Artur (Beterbiev), at least you have a few thousand fans.”

Dubois, 27, took Paul’s comments as a sign of genuine interest, saying: “He said something about getting in line, but he also said he was going to speak to Frank Warren, so it shows they are serious about it.”

While Dubois remains open to the idea, Paul has hinted at returning to cruiserweight – with a potential fight against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez, 34, on the horizon.

Whether Paul will accept Dubois' challenge remains uncertain, but in boxing’s unpredictable landscape, insiders say nothing is off the table for the YouTuber-turned fighter when it comes to his next boxing bout.
