The Exeter Chiefs hooker “grew up tarmacking” so when he returns to see his family in Taunton he occasionally helps out with his old work.
He told Rugby World magazine: “I grew up tarmacking and when I go home sometimes I do it.
“There’s three types of stone for a road; 20mm, 10mm and 6mm. For a road that’s got to be 200 deep, 120mm of 20mm stone and then 80mm on top and that’s your road.
“The council just chuck Tarmac into potholes. I could be a hero and fix those.”
And when the 27-year-old sportsman’s career comes to an end, he’d consider returning to the trade.
Asked what he’d like to achieve outside of rugby, he said: “To set up my own business when I finish. Maybe in the Tarmac industry or property.
“I’m doing a bit of coaching at the moment. I’d love to get North Petherton, my old club, promoted to Nat Three from Regional Two. That would be a massive achievement.”
Dan also believes he should settle down at some point, though he is in “no rush”.
He said: “Outside rugby, I probably need to grow up and have a family at some point but I’m in no rush.”
