Virgil van Dijk won't speak on his future at Anfield

Virgil van Dijk is keeping tight-lipped on the status of his contract at Liverpool.

Following The Reds' "very disappointing" 3-3 draw with Newcastle on Wednesday (04.12.24), and ahead of his contract expiring next summer, the team's captain is not willing to discuss his future at Anfield.

Asked if there is any news regarding his term at the Premier League club, Van Dijk simply said: "Nothing."

Listing the costly mistakes which saw Liverpool's lead cut to seven points in the Premier League, he went on: "We were not good enough [in the first-half], not good at all then they create momentum, we don't.

"We lose the ball too easily at times, sloppy in possession and they make momentum. We had 50 minutes to put it right, which we did but unfortunately we couldn't get it over the line.

"We always said we understand that it's only December, we have so many games coming up - I think eight more games. We need everyone to be on top form, fit and like the manager said we have five defenders for eight more games so we need to manage ourselves as well to be at our best. That's a big challenge."

Liverpool are next set to play Everton on Saturday (07.14.24), and Van Dijk insists it is early days yet as he hopes for a recovery at the weekend.

He said: "We knew already we are going to have ups and downs this year.

"This is not a real down even if it feels it at this point. We will be in recovering and fresh and ready to attack the next challenge."

Despite being held to a draw, head coach Arne Slot was pleased with Liverpool's improved performance in the second-half following a demanding week that saw them beat Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The Dutch coach told Amazon Prime Video: "We had two very tough games and one day less to recover than the opponent. If you are a goal down and after the week we had, in an away game, that we're able to change the game completely in the second half then it’s a really positive thing to take."

Mohamed Salah once again starred for Liverpool as he netted twice and Slot revealed that the club expect the Egyptian to "continue for a long time", even though his contract expires at the end of the season.

He said: "Every time we need Mo Salah he scores a goal.

"We are hoping and expecting he can continue this for a long time. He was outstanding in the second half, he did many special things for us."
