Lee Sharpe wishes he could 'go back' to early Manchester United days

Lee Sharpe wishes he could “go back” to his early days at Manchester United.

The 53-year-old former footballer – who played 193 times for the club between 1988–1996 had a “brilliant” time in his first few seasons and loves the fact fans still want to talk to him about his most memorable games.

Speaking of United’s 1992 6-2 League Cup victory over Arsenal, he told FourFourTwo magazine: “Arsenal’s back four and goalkeeper were absolutely incredible, so for us to score six at Highbury showed just how well we played.

“I scored a hat-trick on one of those evenings when everything came off.

“I was absolutely flying – nobody could get close to me. United fans still talk to me about that game now.

“Performances like that don’t happen every week, unless you’re Lionel Messi, so when they do happen, you have to enjoy every second.

“Those early years at United were such brilliant days. I just wanted to play football and make the manager proud. What I’d give to go back!”

Lee also still gets asked about United’s 2-2 draw against Barcelona in the Champions League in 1994.

He said of the game: “My backheel goal against Barcelona is another moment fans still talk to me about.

“Manchester United had never lost at home in Europe and the manager made it very clear he wanted that record to stay intact.

“We went 1-0 ahead after I teed up Mark Hughes, but then Romario got his tail up and turned the game on its head.

“He scored, set up another and started bossing things.

“There wasn’t long to go when I scored the backheel, 10 minutes or so, so it was a crucial one as well as a nice goal – it saved our home record.

“When you play like we did that night, it’s just the best feeling ever.”
