Shane Lowry 'really hard' on himself

Shane Lowry is “really hard” on himself.

The 37-year-old golfer has learned the best way to approach his game is to focus on the shots he is about to play, not whatever has gone right or wrong before that.

He told Bunkered magazine: “It’s funny, because I get really hard on myself many times when I make mistakes.

“The key is to stay as present as you can.

“You have to worry about the shot that is ahead of your and not focus on the shot just played. Easier said than done.

“That’s the thing with our game, you need to have a short memory. It’s all about the shot that’s in front of you.

“You have to tell yourself sometimes that the scorecard is irrelevant.

“All those previous shots have no effect on what you’re trying to execute right now.

“You’ve got to be flat out focused on what’s at hand, and not allow bad memories to nag at you.

“The only shot that matters is the next one.”

When it comes to bunker shots, Shane isn’t afraid to follow an “old cliché”.

He said” I have a ‘go to’ set up that I utilise every time for bunker shots.

“I get my weigh ton my left side and try and keep it there throughout the swing.

“Doing that allows me to deliver the club confidently into the sand.

“The old cliché – that you should hit the sand about an inch behind the ball – is a cliché for a reason, because it really works well.”
