Shane Lowry learns about course surfaces before tournaments

Shane Lowry feels it is “critical” to learn about the surfaces of the courses he plays on.

The 37-year-old golfer explained a crucial part of his tournament preparation is to spend “a couple hours” getting to know how the ball will play, even in a place he’s familiar with.

He told bunkered magazine: “You need to feel out the greens and surfaces that you’re about to play on.

“Even for club golfers at home, you’ll be experiencing many different speeds from round to round.

“Don’t ever take that for granted.

“Preparation is key before your round and hitting many 30 and 40 footers to gain confidence in your strike and tempo is important.

“People don’t often see my work before the tournaments, but I spend as much as a couple hours on a Tuesday getting to learn the surfaces I’m about to play the rest of the week on.

“It’s critical for me to do my homework as best I can.”

When it comes to his clubs, Shane doesn’t like “gimmicks”.

Discussing his Srixon drivers, he said:” They’re just very traditional-looking clubs. I don’t like different colours. I don’t like gimmicks.

“I just like a nice, traditional-looking club down that sits square.”
