The 37-year-old golfer “struggles” to hit a shot he “can’t really see” so will play the move he knows he is able to and finds his “aggressive” way of playing works well.
Discussing the use of irons, he advised readers of Bunkered magazine: “I move the ball a lot more left to right with my iron approaches than I do with a draw.
“That’s just what I’m most comfortable with and what I feel gives me the most precision and confidence.
“I try the fade the most under pressure as well. It may be different for you at home but, for me, that’s what I favour and what has worked well for my career.
“My irons require a lot of control and the left-to-right ball spins a lot more with that cut-spin, especially on courses with firmer greens.
“For me, visualisation is critical with my iron game.
“I struggle to hit the shot I can’t really see, so I tend to hit the shot I can see and visualize and go for that.
“I’m lucky that I see the game that way.
“It allows me to be aggressive and go after it with iron shots.”
Shane also advised casual golfers to “shorten” the number of clubs they use to chip.
Explaining he typically only uses two wedges for chipping, he added: “That’s something that could be a help for the club golfer – shorten the total number of clubs you use to chip and get as comfortable as you can with those clubs around the greens.
“That way you can remove some variables from a part of the game that demands a lot of precision.”
