The 36-year-old striker has another season and a half left on his Barcelona contract and while he believes he will still be “in good shape” at the end of his deal, he’s unsure if he will carry on playing once it expires.
Asked if he could play until he is 40, he told FourFourTwo magazine: “I don’t know. I’m not afraid or my body or physical things – it depends on my head.
“Maybe in two years, I’ll think I can still play at the top level but maybe I’ll start thinking that it’s time to enjoy my life, to be more focused on family and to try living life without football before I’m 40.
“I have it in my head that I want to be in good shape but also to live without football, to see the difference, but it depends – everything depends on me.
“One day I’ll start to think about this, but my body is still in shape.
“I know that, for the next two years, physically I’ll be ready to play at the top level.”
Robert admitted his “lifestyle” is just as important as physical fitness when it comes to being at the top of his game.
He said: “Lifestyle is important. You can’t be on the top level physically if you live or think completely differently outside of football.
“But everything I do on and off the pitch isn’t just because of football – just because I have to do it.
“No, it’s because I like to do it, I want to do it, this is my lifestyle. That’s a huge difference.
“If I had to do things I didn’t want to do, I probably wouldn’t be in the same place that I am now.
“Mentally it would be too difficult.
“To not only be at the top but stay at the top for so many years, mentally that’s very difficult.
“You don’t only have to work out, there’s everything you don’t see off the pitch.
“The routine, the travelling, also what you’re doing if you have days off – well, maybe ‘days’ is too much… day off! – or even during the vacation period.
“I’m not thinking, ‘I have to stay fit because of football’ – no, I want to be fit and healthy.
“When I finish my career, I probably won’t do exactly the same workout but I am still going to live healthily and do some workouts because it’s important as a human, I just want to feel good.”
