The Serbian legend is searching for a historic 25th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and the commentator believes that Djokovic is more concerned about adding to his extraordinary statistics rather than toppling the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
McEnroe told Eurosport: "What he wants is to get to 25, I don't think he cares how he does it.
"If he knew he was going to win the tournament, of course he’d rather play Alcaraz and get a piece of him and then beat [Jannik] Sinner in the final, the best of the best.
"But at this point, it’s not like he hasn’t proven he can beat the best, and done it a bunch of times. He's just trying to set records that won’t be surpassed. He’s awfully close already, if not there.
"I don't see how any male players are going to break his records for a long time."
Djokovic is preparing for a blockbuster quarter-final against Alcaraz on Tuesday (21.01.25) but refused to give an on-court interview after his weekend win over Jiri Lehecka as he was upset by a TV reporter mocking his supporters in a broadcast.
The world number seven said: "A couple days ago the famous sports journalist who works for official broadcaster, Channel 9 here in Australia, made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments towards me.
"And since then, he chose not to issue any public apology. Neither did Channel 9. So since they're official broadcasters, I chose not to give interviews for Channel 9.
"I have nothing against Jim Courier or the Australian public. It was a very awkward situation for me to face on the court today. It's unfortunate I chose to say something to the crowd, but obviously wasn't the time and space or situation for me to explain what I'm doing right now.
"I leave it to Channel 9 to handle this the way they think, they see fit. That's all."
