Manuel Neuer excited for Bayern Munich's Champions League trip to Celtic

Manuel Neuer is looking forward to his first trip to Celtic Park with Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga giants travel to Celtic for the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie on Wednesday (12.02.25) and the goalkeeper is excited about playing at a stadium renowned for his raucous atmospheres on European nights.

Neuer told TNT Sports: "This is a place where football history has been written.

"I know the atmosphere here is something special - of course, I know the stadium from Champions League games. And if you’ve ever watched an Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers, you know how incredible and intense the atmosphere can get. But as a player, you prepare for that.

"Every moment can decide the game. The focus is different - you try to get every detail 100 per cent right. You prepare thoroughly and go into matches like this with extra concentration and motivation because you know everything is on the line."

Neuer admits that Bayern are very ambitious about conquering Europe this season following a miserable campaign last term that saw the club fail to win silverware for the first time since 2012.

He said: "I think the motivation is even higher for a team like us after a season without a trophy. It definitely plays a role. If you look back to 2012, when we also didn’t win a title, we came back in 2013 and won the Champions League, beating Borussia Dortmund in the final.

"We’re in a good position in the Bundesliga, but we know we’re facing our toughest opponent this weekend. In the Champions League, the play-offs are all or nothing, so the next three games are extremely important for us.

"We know we have to play more than 180 minutes against Celtic - it’s going to be a tough challenge. But we’ve overcome challenges like this before. And right between the two Celtic games, we have (Bayer) Leverkusen - a place where we finally want to win again."
