Alex Callender wants to be a referee.

The 24-year-old Harlequins back-row is currently studying for a teaching degree but she’s also keen to broaden her horizons in the rugby world in years to come.

Asked what she wants to achieve, she told Rugby World magazine: “To finish my teaching degree, I’ve got a year left.

“I’m doing a primary education course so I’d like to qualify in that and teach at primary school.

“I’m really interested in refereeing; I’m such a rugby nause that I think it would suit me.

“Or coaching. I’ve done a couple of sessions at PDC (Player Development Centre) in Wales.

“Helping the younger generation to develop gives you a buzz.”

Alex is superstitious on game days, always wearing the same underwear and accessories, and believes she’s right to do so because the one time she forgot, she sustained a fractured foot on the pitch.

Asked her superstitions, she said: “On game days, I wear the same knickers, same bra, a purple scrunchie and a wristband.

“I forgot my game-day knickers against Sale and that’s when I got injured.”

Alex hopes to see Wales feature in the top three in the Six Nations.

She said: “Third is doable. We need to be back in that top three to be able to say we can compete with the best.

“I’m excited to be coached by Sean Lynn. The Gloucester girls speak so highly of him.

“He puts the person above the player and for me that’s massive.”
