Dylan Frittelli believes in positive thinking

Dylan Frittelli finds “visualisation” and “projecting positive thoughts” beneficial for his game.

The 34-year-old golfer works with an expert on the psychological side of his play and finds an approach them helps him stay calm is far better than trying to “lean into” stress.

He told Today’s Golfer magazine: “I’ve got a guy over in San Diego who helps me with psychology.

A lot of what we do is talking about visualising, projecting positive thoughts and seeing my happy place to tie me down, anchor myself and calm me down in the pressure moments.

“I did see a new guy in Australia, but he had the opposite approach and that kind of got tough for me.

“He was, like, ‘You’ve got to know you’re stressed, you need to lean into that and force your way through it.’

“That didn’t really work for me.”

Dylan credits advice when he was younger to “play” a wedge rather than “hit” them as being the most valuable he’s ever received and thinks a lot of others would benefit from understanding when not to “swing full”.

He said: “Gavan Levenson, a former tour player from South Africa, used to say to me, ‘You don’t ever hit wedges, you play them.’

“I try to bring that advice into my game, so I don’t swing full.

“It’s a finesse shot, much more a three-quarter shot.

“You don’t want to be going 100% at it and lose control.

“And I think a lot of amateurs could learn something from that.”
