Trent Alexander-Arnold criticism 'deluded', says former Liverpool defender

Stephen Warnock has claimed criticism of Trent Alexander-Arnold is "deluded".

The former Liverpool defender - who started his career at the Reds from 2002 to 2007 - has defended the 26-year-old star amid reports he could move to Real Madrid this summer when his contract expires.

Warnock wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Can't believe the negativity directed towards Trent Alexander-Arnold and his potential move away from LFC.

"I've seen comments like 'he should be ashamed' and he's 'not loyal to the club' [and those comments] are deluded.

"He's entitled to make his own choices and challenge himself in a different league and different country.

"He's won everything with LFC, been an incredible servant to the club and should be given a great send off by the fans."

Alexander-Arnold, 26, rose up through the club's academy ranks and made his full debut in October 2016.

He's since made over 300 appearances for Liverpool, and gone on to win the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Carabao Cup and Club World Cup.

Some fans have been critical of his apparent interest in a move away.

According to BBC Sport, although a deal is yet to be fully agreed, it's believed the transfer is reaching the "closing stages".

He's in the final three months of his Liverpool contract, and with a new deal not secured, he is free to talks to clubs abroad.

In 1999, Liverpool legend Steve McManaman moved from the Reds to Real and he has praised Alexander-Arnold for potentially making the same decision.

He told BBC Sport: "If he does choose to go to Real Madrid and he does choose to forge a new adventure with a new language and a new lifestyle, all credit to him.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for him if he does go, and no doubt that he will be a superstar there as well."
