Ollie Watkins annoyed to be left on Aston Villa substitutes bench

Ollie Watkins is frustrated to be a substitute for Aston Villa.

The England striker has been left on the bench in Villa's recent matches and expressed his annoyance with the reduced role after he came on to score during the team's 3-0 win over Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend.

Watkins said: "For me, I’m not happy to sit on the bench.

"It’s disappointing every game that I’m on the bench, but it’s the manager’s decision at the end of the day."

Watkins is now just one goal behind Gabby Agbonlahor's Premier League record of 74 for Villa and he was delighted to make a vital contribution to the team's pursuit of Champions League qualification.

He said: "Obviously the ball from Youri (Tielemans) was executed perfectly. The importance of it, it keeps us in the fight for the Champions League.

"The timing of the goal, coming off the bench, not being in the starting line-up – disappointed to not play – when you put all that into consideration, I’m happy to score.

"Am I aware of the record? Of course I am. That is why I wanted to take the penalty as well. To equal it, then one more to get the record.

"Two more to beat it. I am thinking of breaking it. I will do it at some point and I’m looking forward to that day."

Villa's attention is now on Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against PSG on Tuesday (15.04.25) as they look to overturn a 3-1 deficit on home turf.

He said: "It’s going to be huge. Villa Park, an unbelievable atmosphere.

"At the end of the day we have got nothing to lose. Playing against a top team in Europe. We have to leave it all out on the pitch and have faith that we can do it."
