Arne Slot knew 'for a long time' Liverpool would win the Premier League

Arne Slot knew Liverpool would win the Premier League title "for a long time" before they secured the top spot on Sunday (27.04.25).

The 46-year-old Dutchman has led his side to their 20th English title in his first season in charge and admitted he wasn't surprised by the Reds' success, in part due to Manchester City - who have held the title over the last four seasons - and their dip in form.

Speaking after Liverpool beat Tottenham 5-1 to ensure second-placed Arsenal would be unable to surpass their points total in the final four games of the season, Arne told Sky Sports when asked how long he had known they would win the title: "A long time, to be honest.

"For almost the whole season we were on top of the league, and we had the team that was able to win it, but also you know how tough the Premier League is.

"You cannot take anything for granted but the belief for us to win it was almost throughout the whole season.

"It helped that Man City had a difficult spell, which they hadn't had in five years. That helped us a bit as well."

While he thinks people would have been happy with a top 4 finish for the club, Arne doesn't think that would have reflected well on his players.

He added: "When the season started, every one would have been happy if we finished in the top four. But that wasn't fair for our players, who are much better than that."

Liverpool's last title win five years ago saw muted celebrations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the manager was delighted to have the fans there to celebrate at Anfield on Sunday.

He said: "It is difficult to put into words. The scenes here and before the game tells you more than I can describe.

"[The fans being here] is what makes it special. Three or four years ago they won the league. It was an amazing accomplishment, but the fans weren't there.

"So you can feel how important it was for them to be here. And the boys did an outstanding job today, including our fans."
