Telegram insists arrested CEO Pavel Durov has ‘nothing to hide’

Telegram has insisted CEO Pavel Durov has “nothing to hide” after he was detained in France.

On Saturday (24.08.24), the 39-year-old technology boss was arrested at Paris-Le Bourget airport over allegations the messaging platform was facilitating serious criminal offences including child sexual content, money laundering and drug trafficking, and now the company has argued it is “absurd” its CEO should take the fall for the illegal activities taking place on Telegram.

In a statement, the business said that “its moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving.

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform.”

The corporation emphasised the app abides by European Union laws - including the Digital Services Act, which aims to make online activity safe and accountable for all users.

The statement continued: “Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as means of communication and as a source of vital information.

“We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation. Telegram is with you all.”

French media reported that the warrant for Durov was issued by France at the request of the special unit at the country's interior ministry in charge of investigating crimes against minors, which includes online sexual exploitation, like possessing and disturbing child sex abuse content.

Judicial sources quoted by AFP news say the Telegram boss’ detention was extended on Sunday (25.08.24) and could last up to 96 hours.
