YouTube is limiting videos about weight and appearance for teens

YouTube is limited videos showing non-violent aggression and promoting idealised physical appearances to teenagers.

The video sharing platform has pointed out how this content might be "innocuous as a single video", but could still "be problematic for some teens if viewed repetitively".

In a blog post, YouTube said: "These categories include content that compares physical features and idealises some types over others, idealises specific fitness levels or body weights, or displays social aggression in the form of non-contact fights and intimidation."

They continued: "As a result, we’re now limiting repeated recommendations of videos related to those topics for teens globally."

The company has established "crisis support resource panels" in some countries across Europe, which help users find support from "suicide and self harm crisis service partners".

The platform will also keep engaging with both experts and parents to develop the system.

YouTube added: "YouTube is a place where teens can learn, explore their passions, express themselves, and find belonging.

"We recognise the important part we play in their lives and from today, we’re introducing a new supervised experience on YouTube that will give parents and teens the option to link their accounts and get shared insights and notifications.

"This new experience is designed to keep parents informed about their teens' channel activity on YouTube and help them provide encouragement and advice on responsible content creation."
