Google Maps officially renames Gulf of Mexico

Google has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its Maps app.

The tech titan's move followed US President Donald Trump signing an executive order within the first few days of his return to the White House for it to be renamed, which he says is to "honour American greatness".

In the United States, Google users will see it renamed the Gulf of America when they scroll over the oceanic basin - which is surrounded by the U.S., Mexico and Cuba.

Mexican users will still see it called the Gulf of Mexico.

However, those outside the U.S. will see it be labelled with both names: "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".

It comes as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum previously wrote to Google and called for the tech giant to ditch the renaming plans.

She is quoted by CNN as saying: "If a country wants to change the designation of something in the sea, it would only apply up to 12 nautical miles.

"It cannot apply to the rest, in this case, the Gulf of Mexico."

Google said in a statement: "In the U.S., the Geographic Names Information System has officially updated 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America'.

"As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we've begun rolling out changes to reflect this update."
